All four backpack tiers at a glance
The community wiki lists four craftable backpacks: Tiny, Small, Medium and Large. They add 8, 16, 24 and 32 inventory slots on top of the base 24. With the Large Backpack equipped your bag holds 56 slots in total.
- Tiny Backpack: +8 slots (32 total), crafted by hand from 3 Torn Cloth and 5 String.
- Small Backpack: +16 slots (40 total), made at the Workbench from 1 Torn Cloth, 4 Dried Fur and 1 String.
- Medium Backpack: +24 slots (48 total), made by the Bard from 6 Reptile Leather and 6 Linen.
- Large Backpack: +32 slots (56 total), made by the Bard from 5 Leather and 5 Linen.
Some older guides list only three backpacks with +8, +16 and +24 slots. Those numbers come from Early Access and no longer match the 1.0 tables. If a recipe looks different in your world, trust the crafting menu over any guide, this one included.
How to equip a backpack
Open the character screen and place the backpack in the Backpack Extension slot. The extra slots appear in your inventory right away. Crafting is instant, so there is no waiting at the station.
Only one backpack extension works at a time. When you craft a bigger tier, swap it in and the smaller one becomes spare. Empty the extra slots before swapping down, because items cannot sit in slots you no longer have.
Which backpack is worth rushing
The Tiny Backpack is cheap enough to make in your first hour, so craft it as soon as you have String. The Small Backpack follows once the Workbench is up and you have some Dried Fur. Those two steps take you from 24 to 40 slots with very little effort.
The Medium and Large tiers are where the real gain sits, and both need the Bard and Linen. That makes rescuing the Bard the key unlock for inventory space. Enshrouded has no carry weight, only slots, so every tier is a pure upgrade with no downside.
If you are short on Linen, check whether you need Reptile Leather or plain Leather first. The Large Backpack uses fewer pieces of each material than the Medium one. Some players skip straight to Large once they have Leather and Linen in stock.
Other ways to ease inventory pressure
A backpack is not the only fix for a full bag. Storage chests at your base and regular trips home keep the inventory clear for loot. Plan your base layout so chests sit next to the crafters that use them.
Gathering trips fill slots fastest, so empty out before heading for bulk materials. The resources guide lists where key materials come from. For a full early checklist, see the 1.0 beginner guide.
